Vasco da Gama Dry Dock: Modernization with a Focus on Sustainability
Since March 28, 2025, nicko cruises’ Vasco da Gama has been docked at the Lisnave shipyard in Setúbal, Portugal, for scheduled maintenance. Following the completion of its 2024/25 world cruise, which ended on March 18 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the vessel embarked on a final 10-day voyage, visiting the Canary Islands, Morocco, and the Iberian Peninsula before being temporarily taken out of service.

During its month-long dry dock stay, the 1993-built cruise ship will undergo routine maintenance as well as significant upgrades—most notably the installation of a shore power connection. This enhancement will allow the Vasco da Gama to draw electricity from onshore sources while in port, reducing emissions by eliminating the need to run its engines—a key step toward more sustainable operations.

Ongoing Refurbishments for Enhanced Comfort and Efficiency

Owner Mystic Cruises regularly schedules dry dock stays for the Vasco da Gama in Setúbal. Just last year, the ship underwent extensive renovations, including the installation of walk-in showers in select cabins, a full overhaul of the air conditioning system, repairs to the propulsion shaft, and a fresh hull repainting.

While the current focus is on shore power integration, nicko cruises is expected to announce additional upgrades in the coming weeks. The ship is scheduled to return to service on May 4, 2025, initially operating Mediterranean routes before transitioning to Northern Europe in the summer. Departures from Hamburg and Kiel will offer a variety of itineraries through the autumn season.

With these upgrades, the Vasco da Gama reaffirms its role as a key vessel in the nicko cruises fleet—modernized, more eco-friendly, and ready for the upcoming cruise season.
