Aktuell spielt sich vor der Küste Teneriffas eine beispiellose Evakuierungsaktion ab. Das Expeditionskreuzfahrtschiff MV Hondius der Reederei Oceanwide Expeditions liegt dort auf Reede. Der Grund dafür ist ernst: An Bord ist das seltene Andes-Hantavirus ausgebrochen. Drei Passagiere haben infolge der Infektion bereits ihr Leben verloren. Der Erreger ist hochgefährlich, löst aber laut Experten der WHO keine neue Pandemie aus, da er weitaus weniger ansteckend ist als beispielsweise das Coronavirus.
