The Hanseatic city of Hamburg is reinforcing its ambitions in sustainable tourism with plans to introduce mandatory use of shore power for all docking cruise ships starting in 2027. As explained by Senator for Economic Affairs, Melanie Leonhard, this move would make Hamburg one of the first ports worldwide to prohibit ships from running their diesel engines during their stay. With this measure to reduce pollutant emissions, the metropolis on the Elbe is acting three years ahead of a corresponding European Union regulation.
