Hamburg, April 26, 2025 – With the arrival of Fred Olsen Cruise Lines' MS Balmoral, the new Cruise Center HafenCity officially commences operations today. The cruise ship, primarily carrying British passengers, is docking for a day in the Hanseatic city as part of its one-week round trip from/to Southampton. The ship's arrival also marks the first triple ship call of the year in the Port of Hamburg, as AIDAperla is simultaneously docked at Cruise Center Steinwerder and AIDAsol at Cruise Center Altona.

The commissioning of the city's fourth cruise terminal was initially delayed. The opening was originally planned for the Easter weekend with a call from the Silver Dawn. However, pending safety inspections and final completion work necessitated a postponement. The luxury ship from Silversea Cruises therefore diverted to Cruise Center Altona on April 20 and 21.

All work on the new terminal complex, strategically located next to the Westfield shopping center, is now complete. In light of nearly 300 anticipated cruise calls this year, the new building represents a crucial addition to the port's infrastructure in a central location. The terminal features two berths with lengths of 345 meters and 230 meters, allowing for the simultaneous handling of both a large and a smaller cruise ship. A key innovation is the integrated shore power facility, enabling ships to shut down their engines during berthing, thereby reducing emissions.

The modern terminal building is situated in the southern Überseequartier district. It is primarily designed for calls where passengers undertake shore excursions in Hamburg, while full passenger turnarounds are expected to be less frequent. In addition to passenger areas, the infrastructure includes an underground bus station, car parking facilities, a separate taxi lane, as well as spaces for hotels and retail.

As the most central of Hamburg's four terminals, Cruise Center HafenCity boasts excellent public transport connections. Tourist highlights such as the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district, the Elbphilharmonie concert hall, and Hamburg's city center are easily accessible from here. An additional attraction, particularly compared to the terminals in Altona and Steinwerder, is the arrival and departure route: ships pass directly by the Landungsbrücken piers and the Elbphilharmonie on their way to the berth.

According to the terminal operator, Cruise Gate Hamburg, ships such as MS Hamburg (Plantours Kreuzfahrten), MS Europa 2 (Hapag-Lloyd Cruises), and MSC Poesia will regularly utilize the new Cruise Center HafenCity during the current season.

MS Balmoral is currently on a seven-day voyage (April 24 to May 1, 2025) from Southampton via Hamburg, Rotterdam, and Antwerp, returning to Southampton.
