The reason cited for the postponement is outstanding final construction work and necessary safety inspections at the new terminal. However, officials expect the opening to still take place this spring. According to the current status, the "Balmoral" from Fred Olsen Cruise Lines is now scheduled to be the first ship to call at the new Cruise Center HafenCity on April 26th, 2025. The feasibility of this date crucially depends on the successful completion of all required safety approvals by then.
The state-of-the-art Cruise Center HafenCity is located in the southern Überseequartier, in the immediate vicinity of the recently opened Westfield shopping center. In addition to handling facilities, the complex includes an underground bus station, car parking spaces, and a taxi rank for passengers. Furthermore, hotel and retail spaces are integrated into the building. The quay facility has two berths with lengths of 345 and 230 meters, allowing for the simultaneous handling of one large and one smaller cruise ship.
The location of the Cruise Center HafenCity is characterized by its centrality – it is the most conveniently situated of Hamburg's four terminals, offering excellent connections to public transport. Tourist destinations such as the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district, the Elbphilharmonie concert hall, and Hamburg's city center are easily accessible from here. Another advantage compared to the terminals in Altona and Steinwerder is the unique experience of the ship movements: On their way to the berth in HafenCity, cruise ships pass the prominent Landungsbrücken piers and sail directly past the Elbphilharmonie.
