As early as February, PortMiami set a new global standard by handling ten cruise ships simultaneously on a single day, registering a record number of nearly 68,000 passengers. This momentum continued in April, notably with two key events in the cruise calendar:
- On April 9th, the MSC World America embarked on its maiden voyage from the newly constructed MSC Terminal. With four levels and an area of approximately 490,000 square feet (approx. 45,500 square meters), it is now officially the largest cruise terminal in the world. The ship, one of the most anticipated new additions for 2025, promises luxurious Caribbean journeys directly from Miami.
- The christening ceremony for the Norwegian Aqua, the first ship of the Prima Plus class, took place on April 13th. Equipped with innovative attractions like the Aqua Slidecoaster, this next-generation vessel also begins its Caribbean routes from Miami.
These milestones coincided with Seatrade Cruise Global, the world's leading trade fair for the cruise industry, which celebrated its 40th anniversary at the Miami Beach Convention Center. With over 600 exhibitors and thousands of industry leaders, the event further solidified Miami's role as the hub of the global cruise world.
David Whitaker, President and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, commented: "In the realm of cruising, Greater Miami and Miami Beach are truly unique worldwide. The opening of the largest terminal, record passenger numbers, and hosting Seatrade Cruise Global demonstrate: Our destination is actively shaping the future of the cruise industry."
The leading position of Miami and PortMiami is supported by industry-unique innovations and amenities:
- PortMiami is the first seaport globally to host a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Global Entry Enrollment Center, enabling expedited entry for pre-approved, low-risk travelers.
- First-class facilities and attractions in the immediate vicinity of the port ensure a smooth transition for passengers. The Bayside Concierge luggage program allows travelers to securely store their luggage and explore nearby destinations such as Bayside Marketplace, Bayfront Park, or renowned museums like the Perez Art Museum (PAMM) and the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science. Cultural offerings, such as performances at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, are also just minutes away.
- Miami Beach is accessible via the MacArthur Causeway in just 10 to 15 minutes, offering access to hotels, beaches, and famous attractions.
- The region boasts an internationally recognized culinary scene, awarded by the Michelin Guide, as well as the popular Miami Spice restaurant promotion program, held annually in August and September.
- By implementing shore power infrastructure – as the first major cruise port on the U.S. East Coast – PortMiami makes a significant contribution to sustainability. This system allows ships to connect to the local power grid while docked, instead of running their engines. This significantly reduces emissions and improves air quality. The $125 million investment underscores Miami-Dade County's commitment to environmental protection and positions PortMiami as a pioneer in sustainable cruise practices. The shore power program serves up to five berths and is part of a broader climate resilience strategy.
Annually, over 8.2 million passengers use PortMiami as their port of departure or arrival. Leading cruise lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC Cruises, and Virgin Voyages are based here. PortMiami offers a wide range of itineraries and ship classes for diverse travel needs.
Located on Dodge Island in Biscayne Bay, PortMiami benefits from excellent transportation links. Miami International Airport (MIA), one of the largest international airports in the U.S., is only a 15-minute drive away. Additionally, there is a direct connection to the Brightline high-speed train, offering links from South and Central Florida. Travel by plane, train, or car is therefore straightforward. The area surrounding the port features a variety of hotels tailored to the needs of cruise passengers.
