The foundation for SERENITY's development is the analysis of demographic trends, particularly in Europe and North America. The cruise market is currently experiencing diverging trends: On one hand, there's growing demand for smaller luxury expedition ships among younger travelers. On the other hand, the number of older passengers preferring medium to large vessels is steadily increasing. Projections indicate that by 2100, the over-80 age group in the USA will reach the same size as the over-65 group today.
"Based on this trend, we have defined a new target group, '80+', and analyzed their specific needs and expectations," explains Tim Krug from Meyer Werft's Concept Development Group. He elaborates: "Currently, ship offerings cater to young, middle-aged, and older groups. In the future, however, a more differentiated approach to the older demographic will be necessary." Krug emphasizes: "SERENITY is explicitly not designed as a nursing home. Instead, it aims to offer services comparable to independent senior living facilities, supplemented by some features of assisted living." He cites examples such as specific requirements for onboard pathways, like wider corridors, fostering social interaction, and optimized passenger flow and orientation aids.
Comprehensive Portfolio for the Cruise Industry
At Seatrade Cruise Global 2025, the Meyer Werft Group is also showcasing the breadth of its current product portfolio for the cruise industry. "As the only shipyard, Meyer Werft GmbH covers the entire spectrum from river cruise ships to large ocean liners," highlights Thomas Weigend, Executive Vice President Sales of the Group. "Through our long tradition of innovation and new products, we continuously create added value for shipowners, port operators, and other partners in the maritime sector." The presentation of SERENITY thus follows the shipyard's tradition of offering a glimpse into the long-term future of cruising at Seatrade Cruise Global.
