This is not the first time MSC Cruises has adjusted its plans due to security concerns. Last year, the MSC Euribia was relocated without passengers from Kiel to Dubai for its inaugural winter season in the Middle East. Similarly, this spring, the ship will sail without guests from Europe to Norway, where it will operate cruises departing from Kiel and Copenhagen. For autumn 2025, the company confirms the same approach: the MSC Euribia will once again be repositioned without passengers to Dubai. With no immediate resolution to the security risks in the Red Sea, most cruise lines continue to avoid the area.
Safer Alternative: Rerouting Around Africa
Instead of sailing through the Red Sea, the MSC Euribia will likely take a longer detour: crossing the Atlantic, rounding the southern tip of Africa, and continuing through the Indian Ocean to its destination in the Middle East. This alternative route eliminates the risk of attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen, ensuring the safety of the vessel and crew. The decision reflects an industry-wide trend—nearly all cruise operators are currently opting for similar paths when transferring ships between Europe and Asia, whether carrying passengers or not.
The cancellation of the Grand Voyage highlights the ongoing impact of geopolitical tensions on the cruise industry. MSC Cruises remains committed to safety, even if it means longer transit times and logistical adjustments for repositioning voyages.
