Mandatory Inspections Every Five Years
International regulations require ships to undergo dry dock inspections at least every five years to maintain their certification. This process is comparable to a vehicle’s major technical inspection but far more extensive. Classification societies verify the vessel’s safety, structural integrity, and seaworthiness.
"AIDA Evolution": The Largest Modernization Project in Company History
AIDA Cruises has launched its most ambitious fleet upgrade yet—the "AIDA Evolution" program. The initiative focuses on the seven ships of the Sphinx class, built between 2007 and 2013 at Meyer Werft in Papenburg. As the oldest vessels in the fleet, they will receive comprehensive technical and aesthetic upgrades. The AIDAdiva was the first to undergo modernization in early 2025.
Each "AIDA Evolution" dry dock stay is scheduled for seven weeks. Confirmed dates include AIDAluna (fall 2025) and AIDAbella (spring 2026). Additionally, gaps in the 2026/27 winter itineraries for AIDAmar (fall 2026) and AIDAblu (spring 2027) suggest similar dry dock periods, though official confirmations are still pending.
Routine Maintenance vs. Major Refits
Beyond large-scale modernization, ships undergo shorter dry dock stays (typically 2–3 weeks) for routine maintenance, minor repairs, and cosmetic updates. These are far less extensive than the "AIDA Evolution" overhauls.
