At around 9:45 PM, the crew of the AIDAnova contacted the DGzRS as the ship was sailing on the Elbe near Otterndorf. In dense fog and poor visibility, the rescue cruiser "Anneliese Kramer" reached the cruise ship near Cuxhaven. The rescue team boarded the vessel to provide medical assistance and stabilize the passenger's condition. Subsequently, the individual was transferred to the rescue cruiser using a specialized stretcher and safely brought to Cuxhaven, where they were handed over to emergency medical services.
Medical evacuations from cruise ships are a well-established procedure used when onboard medical care is insufficient. In such cases, the ship's medical team determines that hospital treatment on land is essential. Depending on the situation, evacuations are conducted via helicopter or rescue cruiser. In some instances, the ship may even return to the nearest port to transfer the affected passenger to emergency services. Over the years, these procedures have been continuously refined to ensure guest safety.
Following the incident, the AIDAnova continued its journey as planned. The itinerary, running from February 1 to February 8, 2025, takes the ship from Hamburg to Rotterdam, Zeebrugge, Cherbourg, and Southampton before returning to Hamburg.
This incident highlights the importance of well-coordinated maritime rescue operations and the readiness of crews to act swiftly and professionally, even under challenging conditions.
