Spy Incident in Hamburg Port: Drone Spotted Over British Aircraft Carrier
According to a report by Bild, the drone measured approximately 1.5 by 1.5 meters, making it significantly larger than typical consumer drones. Initial observations suggest it may have been a reconnaissance drone hovering directly over the aircraft carrier. At 284 meters in length, the HMS Queen Elizabeth is one of the most advanced vessels in the Royal Navy fleet.
Response by Military and Police
Reports indicate that a Bundeswehr drone defense unit attempted to neutralize the drone using signal jammers. However, the drone exited the military exclusion zone before these measures could succeed, at which point the water police took over. The drone was tracked as it flew over Hamburg's famous Fish Market but ultimately disappeared near the Tollerort container terminal.
A critical aspect of this case: the terminal is partially owned by a Chinese company, raising additional security concerns. The Hamburg State Criminal Police Office has launched an investigation into "actions threatening national security" against unidentified suspects.
Background: Increasing Drone Sightings Over Sensitive Areas
Drone sightings over sensitive areas are not uncommon. In 2022 alone, there were 446 reported drone incidents over German military facilities, according to Tagesschau. Alarming cases include drones observed over sites where Ukrainian forces were undergoing training. The German Ministry of Defense suspects Russia and China to be key players behind such activities.
Investigations into the current case are ongoing. New findings could shed light on the growing issue of drone espionage in Germany, further intensifying discussions around security measures and foreign interference.
