Medical emergency on AIDAstella: Route changed and passenger evacuated by helicopter
On cruises, a medical emergency requires rapid intervention from both the medical team and the ship's management. In particularly serious cases, where treatment on board is not sufficient, a medical evacuation is initiated. The ship's doctor decides on the necessary measures in consultation with the captain.
The medical staff on cruise ships are fully trained and prepared for a wide range of emergencies. Evacuation by helicopter or dinghy is carried out if further treatment ashore appears necessary. In some situations, the ship may also head for a nearby port earlier than planned.
After the affected guest had been safely evacuated, the AIDAstella continued its journey as planned and reached the port of Port Elizabeth on Monday morning. This port is a popular starting point for safaris in South Africa. After a two-day stay, the AIDAstella will continue its journey and call at other ports in the Indian Ocean before reaching its destination of Dubai.
