Since Wednesday, October 30, 2024, the cruise ship Vasco da Gama has been without guests on its journey from Safaga, Egypt, to Salalah in Oman. The passengers left the ship beforehand to experience a special land program in Oman, including comfortable hotel accommodation and excursions.

One week earlier, on October 23, 2024, the Vasco da Gama began its great world voyage 2024/2025 from Heraklion on Crete. On board were guests who had booked the entire 148-day voyage until its conclusion on 18 March 2025 in Tenerife, as well as other travelers who joined the ship for one or more legs. During the voyage, the Vasco da Gama will call at a total of 64 ports in 26 different countries.

After starting in Crete, the route took the ship first to Limassol in Cyprus as well as Hurghada and Safaga in Egypt, with the Vasco da Gama passing through the Suez Canal and the northern Red Sea. According to a nicko cruises plan set in May 2024, guests disembarked in Safaga on October 30, 2024. The decision to send the ship through this area without passengers was made due to the political situation around the Arabian Peninsula, particularly in the Gulf of Aden.

The passengers were brought safely to Oman on a charter flight, where they are now staying in a 5-star hotel in Salalah and taking part in a varied program. The Vasco da Gama, which is currently sailing with crew only, will continue its journey along the Yemeni coast under special caution and is expected to reach Salalah on November 4, 2024. At this point, the guests will board the ship again to continue the 2024/2025 world cruise as planned.
