How was this possible? Modern cruise ships are essentially floating smart cities heavily reliant on interconnected technology. The perpetrators, traveling as ordinary guests across two cabins, seemingly used the physical network ports in their rooms—likely intended for Smart TVs—to infiltrate the system. Due to insufficient VLAN management and inadequate network segmentation, they were able to bypass digital barriers and feed their own audio into the otherwise strictly secured SIP protocol of the communication system.

Fortunately, the crew reacted with lightning speed. The onboard IT department quickly traced the intrusion to the network ports in the perpetrators' cabins and immediately isolated them from the system. To prevent a potential mass panic, Captain Gabriele Russo quickly took to the microphone himself.
