On Sunday, August 2, 2026, the seaport of Kiel experienced a true maritime highlight: three large cruise ships docked at the same time. Mein Schiff Relax and Norwegian Sun were moored centrally at the Ostseekai. AIDAbella found her berth at the Ostuferhafen. For the port and the city, this triple call meant a major logistical operation. Thanks to good planning, however, everything went off without a hitch.

The three ships showcased the great variety of ocean holidays on this day. While Norwegian Sun brought international flair to the fjord, the modern, LNG-powered Mein Schiff Relax set off on a relaxed Baltic Sea voyage. A special highlight was the itinerary of AIDAbella: she departed on a 14-day cruise towards Scotland and Iceland. The goal of this voyage is to allow guests to observe the total solar eclipse out on the open sea on August 12.

A major event like this naturally also brings ecological requirements. Kiel planned ahead in this regard and invested heavily in environmental technology. Thanks to the port's modern shore power facilities, all three ships could be supplied with green electricity almost emission-free. The engines remained switched off at the berth. This protects the environment and ensures clean air in the port city.

Economically, cruise tourism is also a huge asset for Kiel. Thousands of passengers disembarked or started their journey, which strongly benefits the local economy. A looming traffic chaos in the city center was avoided. Thanks to a smart park-and-ride system, arriving guests were able to park their cars outside the center and take a relaxed shuttle bus ride directly to the terminals.
