Blackout on the Celebrity Constellation: Power Failure in the Mediterranean

On August 2, 2025, the Celebrity Constellation experienced a ship-wide power failure, a so-called blackout. At around 3:00 a.m. in the Ionian Sea, the electrical propulsion and essential systems such as the air conditioning and sanitary facilities failed. The cruise ship subsequently drifted powerless in the water for about two to three hours. During this time, the automatic emergency generators took over the basic supply, for example for emergency lighting and communication.

The cause of the incident lay in the ship's complex electronic control system. The Celebrity Constellation features a retrofitted hybrid system of gas turbines and diesel engines. If an error occurs in this system, the Power Management System shuts down all generators for self-protection. This protective measure of the onboard network led to the immediate loss of maneuverability.

The incident highlights the technical challenges of older Millennium-class ships whose systems have been upgraded over the years. In July 2025, the shipping company Celebrity Cruises recorded similar incidents, including an electrical fire on the Celebrity Infinity and propulsion problems on the newbuild Celebrity Beyond. Such cascading failures illustrate the high strain on the maritime infrastructure during the peak season.

Despite the rising temperatures in the cabins due to the failure of the ventilation, there were no injuries on board. The crew was able to gradually restore the main power supply after finding the cause. By increasing the cruising speed, the ship reached its next port in Messina on schedule. Since there was no delay at the destination, the EU passenger rights for financial compensation did not apply; passengers received free Wi-Fi and drinks on a goodwill basis.
