For the airborne evacuation (helicopter hoist), the ship had to reduce its speed and adjust its course to the wind. The affected outer decks were strictly cleared to ensure the safety of all passengers from the strong downdraft of the rotors. A specialized search and rescue (SAR) helicopter approached the vessel and safely hoisted the patient using a winch. The maneuver demanded the highest precision from both the crew and the pilots.
Fortunately, the weather conditions in the North Sea were cooperative. With moderate winds and wave heights of around two meters, the complex rescue maneuver went smoothly. As soon as the helicopter turned toward the mainland with the patient, the AIDAperla picked up speed again. Thanks to the high power reserves of the diesel-electric propulsion system, the ship was able to quickly make up for the lost time.
Despite the interruption, the tightly scheduled itinerary remained stable. The ship reached the port of Haugesund as planned. Such incidents impressively demonstrate how seamlessly international cooperation works between cruise lines, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), and state rescue services. For the relatives left behind and the patient, a specialized care network organizes all further support on land in the background.
