On July 19, 2026, the Queen Mary 2 returned to Hamburg – a very special date. Exactly 22 years after her historic maiden call, the famous ocean liner moored in the Hanseatic city after an eleven-month break. Already at dawn around 5 a.m., the ship passed the Elbe suburbs, attracting thousands of onlookers. After a demanding turning maneuver, the giant docked at the Cruise Center Steinwerder.

The fascination for the Queen Mary 2 is no coincidence. She is not an ordinary cruise ship, but the last active transatlantic liner in the world. Her pointed bow, extra-thick steel hull, and massive draft ensure that she stays safe and stable on the water even during severe North Atlantic storms. With a top speed of up to 28 knots, she is also significantly faster than conventional ships.

For Hamburg, the British shipping company Cunard is a tremendous economic factor. That same evening, the ship departed on time to embark on a short taster cruise to Southampton. From there, the classic nine-day transatlantic crossing to New York began. On board, guests can expect a traditional British atmosphere featuring a planetarium, the largest floating library, and a strict separation of cabin classes known as the Grill system.

Anyone who missed the spectacle will have further opportunities this year. The Queen Mary 2 is expected in the Port of Hamburg again on August 27, September 2, and October 20, 2026. The Hanseatic city will continue to be a central port of call for this iconic ship, bridging the gap between maritime tradition and modern port logistics.
