In July 2026, Virgin Voyages' cruise ship "Scarlet Lady" experienced a highly unusual journey through the Mediterranean. Chartered by the LGBTQ+ travel operator Atlantis Events, the ship suddenly faced massive political hurdles. Both Turkey and Egypt surprisingly denied the vessel entry into their waters for ideological reasons. Consequently, the planned stops in Kuşadası, Istanbul, and Alexandria had to be canceled at short notice, forcing the operator to quickly change the itinerary.

Greece proved to be a reliable partner in this situation, allowing the ship to be rerouted to the port of Souda on the island of Crete. However, while the Greek coast was already coming into view on the starboard and port sides, the ship's internal security team made a concerning discovery. A 35-year-old Spanish passenger was caught on board with illegal drugs, including cocaine and cannabis.

To protect the ship and the other passengers, the crew acted immediately and handed the suspect directly over to the Greek coast guard upon arrival. Although local authorities released the man relatively quickly, as the small quantities were deemed for personal use, Virgin Voyages showed no leniency. In accordance with the cruise line's strict zero-tolerance policy, the passenger was permanently banned from the ship and had to arrange his own journey home.

This incident highlights the growing challenges cruise operators face in politically volatile regions. It demonstrates how quickly itineraries can change and how strictly shipping companies enforce their internal security guidelines to avoid jeopardizing their international operational licenses. Despite the turbulent events, the flexible rerouting ensured that the journey could safely conclude as planned in Trieste, Italy.
