But why does the state need to intervene in the first place? Following an existential crisis triggered by the pandemic and skyrocketing material costs, the shipyard was effectively nationalized in 2024, with the government taking an 80 percent stake. Because shipping companies pay the vast majority of construction costs only upon delivery of the finished ships, the shipyard has to advance gigantic sums of money. Since private banks are currently unwilling to bear this enormous pre-financing risk alone, the new state guarantees are what make the loans—and thus the vital MSC order—possible at all.
To ensure history does not repeat itself and to make production significantly more efficient, a breath of fresh air has arrived in the executive suite. As of July 1, 2026, former Airbus manager Dr. André Walter has taken the helm at the shipyard. His mission is to transfer proven processes and principles from aviation's serial production into shipbuilding. If this change of course is successful and Meyer Werft reliably returns to profitability, the traditional company is slated to be fully returned to private hands by 2028.
