AIDAperla Aborts Port Call in Nordfjordeid Due to Strong Winds

Today, on July 7, 2026, the cruise ship AIDAperla had to cancel its scheduled port call in Nordfjordeid, Norway, at short notice. The 300-meter-long Hyperion-class ship was approaching the port when strong winds of up to 9.7 meters per second compromised safety. Since the AIDAperla has an enormous surface area exposed to the wind, and the ship's own stabilizers are ineffective at low speeds in the harbor basin, the captain decided to safely abort the maneuver. A main reason for turning back lies in the special local infrastructure. Nordfjordeid does not use a solid concrete quay wall, but rather the so-called "SeaWalk". This floating bridge is extended to the ship while it holds its position anchored between large buoys. However, if strong winds from starboard or port press against the huge side of the ship, or if sudden katabatic winds occur in the fjord, the ship is at risk of drifting. The sensitive connection could tear and cause severe damage. To avoid this risk, the arrival was halted.

For the guests on board, this means a last-minute change of plans. Instead of going ashore via the SeaWalk, vacationers will now experience an unexpected sea day featuring spectacular "scenic cruising" through the Norwegian fjord landscape. All pre-booked shore excursions will be automatically refunded to the onboard accounts. In addition, the entertainment program on board, for example in the covered Beach Club or the Theatrium, is immediately ramped up. Even if this legally constitutes a travel defect, cruise lines usually react quickly with small compensations to keep spirits high.

For the small municipality on the Nordfjord, however, the cancellation has noticeable economic consequences. With up to 4,000 passengers missing, museums like the Sagastad Center remain empty and booked excursion buses stand still. The town heavily relies on the income generated by cruise ships. This event clearly shows how vulnerable modern fjord tourism is to the weather. The cruise line is now setting the AIDAperla's course directly for the next scheduled port in Ålesund.
