The cruise line, however, took all the more drastic action. 16 involved individuals received an immediate and lifetime ban. They were put on the so-called "Do Not Sail" list. This draconian ban will most likely apply company-wide to all brands under the Carnival Corporation umbrella. Anyone who acts out here will stay ashore permanently with most major cruise lines.
Unfortunately, such incidents are becoming increasingly frequent in the cruise industry. Gigantic ships often meet outdated terminals and logistical bottlenecks on land. No matter whether the guests leave the ship via starboard or port: When thousands of stressed, waiting passengers, exhausted from their journey home, crowd into narrow customs halls at the same time, a small spark is all it takes for a total escalation.
To counteract this, smarter processes will be needed in the future. In addition to more present and trained security personnel, digital queues via smartphone apps could better guide and disperse the crowds. An industry-wide ban list for troublemakers, similar to the "No Fly" list in aviation, is already being intensely discussed but currently fails in practice due to strict data protection regulations and a lack of unified IT standards.
