Just in time for the 2026 summer season, the vessel—once the largest cruise ship in the world—underwent an extensive modernization. Passengers can look forward to plenty of action and dining options on board. New additions include "The Perfect Storm" water slide park, featuring the first boomerang slide at sea, a vibrantly redesigned pool deck with exclusive rentable casitas, and an expanded casino. The culinary offerings have also evolved significantly: with the addition of the Mexican eatery "El Loco Fresh" and the Asian teppanyaki experience "Izumi," guests can now choose from a total of 15 different dining venues.
The maiden call also marks a milestone for Hamburg's cruise infrastructure. Integrated into the major Westfield Hamburg Überseequartier urban development project, the new HafenCity terminal replaces the temporary structures of the past decade. It features two state-of-the-art berths designed for efficient, city-center passenger handling. A major advantage for both crew and travelers is the seamless transit connectivity: unlike the industrially located Steinwerder terminal, HafenCity offers a direct link to the municipal public transport network (via the "Überseequartier" subway station) and expansive pedestrian zones. Four additional visits by Liberty of the Seas are scheduled for the Elbe river by late summer, utilizing a flexible rotation between the Steinwerder and HafenCity terminals.
Alongside passenger comfort, environmental sustainability remains a key focus. Hamburg is taking a pioneering role across Europe: since the beginning of 2026, all three of its cruise terminals (Altona, Steinwerder, and HafenCity) have been fully equipped with certified shore power facilities—four years ahead of the statutory European Union mandate. Ships like Liberty of the Seas that plug into the city's green electricity grid during their layover can completely shut down their auxiliary diesel engines. This directly eliminates nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and particulate matter in the downtown Elbe area.
For the metropolitan region, booming cruise tourism—with 331 ocean-going calls projected for 2026—serves as a massive economic driver. Turnaround passengers embarking or disembarking in Hamburg spend an average of €133.59 per person in the city, primarily benefiting retail and gastronomy. Furthermore, 38 percent of guests recently booked at least one hotel night before or after their cruise. Alongside Liberty of the Seas, seven other high-profile maiden calls in 2026, including Mein Schiff Relax and Valiant Lady, underscore Hamburg's rise
