In the spring of 2026, Meyer Werft unveiled a true revolution with "Project Vision": the world's first fully battery-electric large cruise ship. Measuring 275 meters in length and accommodating 1,856 passengers, the historic shipbuilding company is demonstrating what eco-friendly holidays at sea could look like in the near future. Instead of traditional heavy fuel oil, this gigantic new build relies entirely on battery power, which is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95 percent.

By eliminating large diesel engines, the ship's appearance also changes completely. Massive funnels or exhaust shafts are no longer needed, creating a huge, continuous sun deck. Whether you are standing at the railing on the starboard (right) or port (left) side, the panoramic view is entirely unobstructed. Additionally, a covered aqua park at the stern ensures the ship remains a perfect destination in any weather—from the warm Caribbean to the cooler Baltic Sea. Another major advantage is that the ship glides through the waves whisper-quietly, without any disruptive engine vibrations.

The enormous battery packs required are supplied by their Norwegian partner, Corvus Energy. The real challenge, however, lies on land: recharging the batteries during a short port stay requires gigantic 100-megawatt fast chargers, which are currently almost nonexistent. To ensure the ship remains flexible and capable of crossing the Atlantic, a hybrid version is available upon request. This version uses small, efficient generators running on eco-friendly fuels like green methanol to stay on course even during charging bottlenecks or long voyages.
