Previously, sea days were often just crossings bridged by onboard activities. This is now changing fundamentally. The ships navigate to specific coordinates to offer passengers unique experiences. This not only protects the environment through lower fuel consumption but also relieves popular, often overcrowded port cities like Venice or Santorini.
The program offers fascinating highlights at sea. During the "Sea of Stars" event, the ship navigates to the darkest point of the sea. All exterior lighting is turned off, allowing the starry sky to be observed completely undisturbed. Other experiences include sunset parties in front of the active Stromboli volcano or a French breakfast in the morning light off the cliffs of the Calanques.
The new concept on the water is closely intertwined with the shore excursions. Costa has completely revised its land-based offerings for 2026 and 2027, dividing them into four groups tailored to different needs. The experience is rounded off by appropriate culinary delights. Guests enjoying the view of the volcano from the starboard or port side are simultaneously served regional specialties as part of the "MyItalian" package.
To deliver these experiences, Costa is deploying its best ships in the Mediterranean. The modern, LNG-powered Costa Toscana and Costa Smeralda will take over the western routes. A major highlight is the return of the Costa Serena. After ten years in Asia, she will be deployed in the eastern Mediterranean, including departures from Greece, starting in the spring of 2027.
Participation in the "Sea Destinations" is included in all ticket fares at no extra charge. To secure bookings for 2027 early on, the cruise line is also offering significant early-bird discounts. The new program is being promoted in the German-speaking market through the large-scale "La Bella Vita" campaign. The face of the campaign is entertainer Giovanni Zarrella, who conveys the authentic Italian lifestyle.
In addition to its entertainment value, the concept also places great emphasis on the environment. Through "slow steaming"—the deliberate slow sailing or holding of position—greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs are reduced. At the same time, Costa raises its guests' awareness of nature, for instance by observing whales in marine protected areas like the Pelagos Sanctuary.
