At the same time, the port optimized its onshore logistics. Newly established, color-coded traffic zones strictly separate pedestrians from bus operations. This unbundles visitor flows, minimizes the risk of accidents, and ensures barrier-free access to local attractions such as the Vøringsfossen waterfall. Cruise lines are actively supporting this local direction: smaller, environmentally friendly ships like Ambassador Cruise Line's Ambition already call at the port and participate in local environmental initiatives.
Above all, the extension of the quay wall serves as the foundation for the next major project: a state-of-the-art shore power facility with a capacity of 12 MVA. Starting in April 2027, it will supply docked cruise ships entirely with green electricity from the Norwegian grid. This allows vessels to completely shut down their onboard generators during their stay, reducing local emissions at the berth to zero. The project is backed by the state-owned enterprise Enova with a maximum grant of 20 million NOK.
For the construction and operation of the facility, Plug Eidfjord AS was established as a public-private partnership. The municipality retains full ownership of the quay infrastructure but brings the grid expertise of the energy giant Eviny on board through the joint venture. Strategically, this investment is vital for Eidfjord: given the strict zero-emission regulations in neighboring World Heritage fjords, the port is securing its place among the green leaders and remains highly attractive to the world's most modern fleets.
