The cruise industry breathes a sigh of relief: After weeks of uncertainty, the MSC Euribia is finally on its way to the Baltic Sea and will resume regular operations from Kiel on May 16, 2026. The state-of-the-art ship was stuck in the Persian Gulf due to the geopolitical escalation in the Middle East—the so-called Iran War. Along with other members of the fleet, the ocean liner was unintentionally caught in the crossfire and had to completely suspend passenger operations.

To guarantee the safety of the guests, tens of thousands of vacationers were brought home in an unprecedented rescue operation using charter flights. The ships themselves initially remained behind as "ghost ships" with their tracking systems turned off so as not to present a target in the crisis zone. It was only through a brief diplomatic window in mid-April that the ships finally managed to escape. In a closely guarded convoy and with only an absolute skeleton crew on board, they passed through the dangerous bottleneck of the Strait of Hormuz.

While cruise lines like TUI Cruises chose the long but safe detour via South Africa for their "Mein Schiff" fleet, the MSC Euribia took the faster route through the Suez Canal. A crucial stopover was Valletta in Malta. There, the massive ship was quickly geared up for its restart: hundreds of crew members came on board, fresh provisions were stocked, and the eco-friendly cruiser's LNG tanks were filled for the upcoming Northern Europe season.

When the MSC Euribia sets sail from Kiel in mid-May, it will be heading for the Norwegian fjords—true "safe havens." The dramatic events of recent months have permanently changed the deployment planning of the entire industry. Instead of relying on uncertain winter destinations in the Orient, cruise lines will increasingly focus on more robust waters in the future. For vacationers, this means that Scandinavia, the Canaries, or Southeast Asia will become even more of a focus as safe travel destinations, while you can relax and enjoy the peaceful ocean view to port and starboard.
