Vasco Da Gama Defect: World Cruise Aborted and Schedule Chaos at Nicko Cruises

The prestigious world cruise of the Vasco Da Gama came to an abrupt end in Lisbon on April 25, 2026. The cause of the cancellation was a serious mechanical defect in the starboard controllable pitch propeller. Experts attribute the damage to the immense continuous strain caused by the geopolitically forced circumnavigation of Africa. As the Red Sea was impassable due to the security situation, the ship (built in 1993) had to cover thousands of additional nautical miles under maximum load, which ultimately overwhelmed the aging machinery.

The vessel is currently in dry dock at Damen Shiprepair in Brest, France. However, repairs are being significantly delayed because there are no "off-the-shelf" spare parts for the 30-year-old technology. Many components must be painstakingly remanufactured and certified using reverse engineering. This unforeseen waiting period is disrupting Nicko Cruises' entire summer schedule, as the company has no backup capacity in its deep-sea segment.

The impact on passengers is substantial: the culinary cruise on May 1 and the planned restart for the Hamburg Port Anniversary on May 9 had to be canceled entirely. As an emergency solution, the operator is now planning a shortened replacement cruise starting on May 13—not in Hamburg, but in Bremerhaven. According to German travel law, affected travelers are not only entitled to a refund but may also be eligible for compensation for loss of holiday enjoyment.

Nicko Cruises is under significant financial pressure: in addition to enormous shipyard costs and charter flights for stranded guests, a new fuel surcharge was introduced on May 1. The case of the Vasco Da Gama highlights the business risk of single-ship fleets and shows that ecological retrofitting alone is not enough when the fundamental mechanics of historic ships reach their breaking points.
