Good news for all cruise fans: The cruise line TUI Cruises is reactivating the highly sought-after summer routes of "Mein Schiff 4" and "Mein Schiff 5" in the European Mediterranean. After a 50-day detainment of the ships in the blocked Persian Gulf, the company was initially forced to make sweeping cancellations. Now, the sailings of "Mein Schiff 5" from Heraklion (starting May 15, 2026) and "Mein Schiff 4" from Trieste (starting May 17, 2026) will take place exactly as originally planned.

To make the restart as smooth as possible, the IT department is relying on an unusual approach. The booking system has fully automatically reactivated the passengers' previously cancelled tickets. Guests whose trips were actually called off can now board after all. To avoid any inconvenience, TUI Cruises is contacting affected customers directly and offering flexible solutions in case they have already made other vacation plans in the meantime.

To ensure the giant ships arrive in the Mediterranean on time, they are foregoing paying guests on their current crossing. They are sailing as so-called "ghost ships" on a direct route and at top speed around the African continent. Other long-planned journeys, such as a lengthy repositioning cruise from Cape Town to Mallorca, were completely dropped from the schedule without replacement to meet this tight timeframe.

During this rapid transit, background logistics are running at full speed. In ports like Cape Town and Malta, the regular service crew is coming back on board in stages. From the cabins on starboard to the large restaurants on port, the entire ship is being polished to a high gloss. Supplies are being replenished and all systems thoroughly flushed to offer passengers a flawless restart in mid-May.

This joyful turnaround for the summer schedule was made possible by the daring escape of the two ships from the conflict zone. During a tiny diplomatic window of opportunity in mid-April, the ocean liners were able to leave the military blockade of the Strait of Hormuz behind. Now, nothing stands in the way of a carefree summer in the Mediterranean.
