On the late afternoon of April 18, 2026, passengers aboard the Royal Princess experienced a brief scare. About three hours after the scheduled departure from Los Angeles towards the Mexican Riviera, a crew alert was triggered. The reason: massive smoke development in the engine room, which quickly billowed outside through the funnels.

The technical culprit was quickly identified. A hydrodynamic plain bearing on the turbocharger of diesel generator number 4 had failed. As a result, lubricating oil was forced into the hot exhaust housing, where it instantly evaporated, creating dense, white smoke. Fortunately, there was no open fire. Thanks to the modern Power Management System (PMS), the affected generator was immediately disconnected from the high-voltage grid and isolated.

The crew reacted highly professionally and strictly according to emergency protocols. While the service staff swiftly withdrew from the public areas, specially trained leaders wearing life jackets and neon green caps took over the precautionary securing of the escape routes. However, a short time later, the captain was able to give the all-clear over the public address system and restore regular operations on board.

Despite the loss of one generator, the Royal Princess continued her voyage unfazed. Maintaining a speed of almost 20 knots, the cruise ship kept heading towards its next destination, Cabo San Lucas. This once again proves the high redundancy and power reserves of modern diesel-electric ship propulsion systems, allowing the vessel to navigate safely and swiftly even with reduced overall power.
