Despite the severe damage, the ship initially remained maneuverable. The crew managed to steer the "A-Rosa Sena" safely to the Westelijke Merwedekanaaldijk and moor it there. An uncontrolled drifting on the busy waterway was thus successfully prevented. The approximately 250 passengers remained unharmed during the collision. Since it is a family-oriented ship, many children were also on board.
A few hours after the accident, the situation escalated due to a technical cascading effect. The ship features a modern diesel-battery hybrid drive ("E-Motion"). Due to the destroyed cables in the wheelhouse, the sensitive Battery Management System (BMS) registered fault currents. To prevent a catastrophic battery fire, the system initiated an emergency shutdown. This led to a total power outage. Heating, lighting, and sanitary facilities failed completely.
Due to the blackout and the cold outside temperatures, the incident command decided to evacuate the ship in the middle of the night. Without a public address system, the sleeping passengers had to be woken up individually. Rescue workers led the families in the dark over an unpaved dike to waiting buses. This logistical challenge went off calmly and without any further injuries.
On the morning of March 26, the unmaneuverable "A-Rosa Sena" was finally towed to the Oranjewerf for repairs by harbor tugs. The bridge remained structurally intact and was quickly reopened to traffic. The incident clearly highlights the specific risks that arise when modern, highly networked ship technology meets historical bridge infrastructure.
