Fire at Meyer Werft: Engine Room Blaze on New Cruise Ship Quickly Extinguished
The well-equipped works fire brigade was quickly on the scene with 35 firefighters. They were supported by five members of the Papenburg-Untenende municipal fire department. Together, they were able to extinguish the fire quickly and effectively. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. The police routinely confiscated the scene of the fire for further investigation.
The affected ship is highly likely the "Carnival Festivale". This new cruise giant for Carnival Cruise Line is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2027. The ship is currently in the complex phase of engine installation. This particular construction phase requires extensive welding work deep within the hull.
The fire comes at a turbulent time for Meyer Werft. Shortly beforehand, there was a change in management and media reports surfaced regarding alleged financial bottlenecks. However, the shipyard sharply rejected these reports, emphasizing that financing is secured until 2028. In addition, the company is in advanced negotiations for a massive billion-dollar order with MSC Cruises.
Despite the current challenges, the incident also highlights positive aspects. The safety concepts and the rapid reaction of the emergency services prevented a worse outcome. Now, any possible delays caused by the police investigations must be absorbed into the construction schedule. If this succeeds, the shipyard will remain on a steady course.
