AIDAnova: Storm "Elli" Forces Early Return to Hamburg

Anyone glancing at the Port of Hamburg today, January 8, 2026, might rub their eyes in astonishment. The berth at the Steinwerder terminal was supposed to be empty – instead, the AIDAnova is already docked there. The "kissing lips" ship returned to its home port almost two days earlier than planned. The reason for this has a name: Storm Low "Elli".

Safety First: Southampton Cancelled Actually, Fish & Chips and sightseeing in London were on the agenda for the guests of the current "Metropolises from Hamburg" tour. However, the scheduled call at the British port of Southampton for today had to be cancelled at short notice. After AIDAnova left Cherbourg, France, yesterday evening, weather conditions in the English Channel deteriorated rapidly.

The ship's command analyzed the data and made a decision that always takes precedence in seafaring: safety for the ship, crew, and passengers. Wind gusts of over 100 km/h and wave heights of up to seven meters made entering the Solent (the strait off Southampton) and picking up the pilot impossible.

A Ship as a Sail Why is the wind such a big issue for a giant like the AIDAnova? You have to imagine the ship like a gigantic sail. With a length of over 330 meters and a height of 20 decks, the broadside of the ship – whether viewed from port side (left) or starboard (right) – offers an enormous surface area for storm gusts to attack. Even the strongest side thrusters and tugboats reach their physical limits at such hurricane-force winds when trying to push the ship safely against the pier.

Full Steam Ahead to the Elbe Instead of "weathering it out" off the Isle of Wight, the captain and crew decided to flee forward. With a remarkable speed of over 21 knots (that's almost a sprint for such a colossus), the Nova set course for the German Bight to stay ahead of the storm field's core.

The result: Instead of stormy seas and wobbly plates in the restaurant, guests are now enjoying an unexpected "overnight" stay in the Hanseatic city. The ship is safely moored in Steinwerder.

What Does This Mean for the Guests? While the excursion to England has fallen through, the mood on board is likely still relaxed. AIDA Cruises usually refunds the port fees for the cancelled port as well as booked excursions. Additionally, the early arrival in Hamburg offers the chance to explore our beautiful Hanseatic city extensively – perhaps with a visit to the Miniatur Wunderland or a relaxed evening at the Landungsbrücken, completely without any swell.

Regular disembarkation will take place as planned on Saturday, January 10. Until then, the AIDAnova is probably the most luxurious hotel in the city.
