Cast Off for the Great American Lap: MS Artania Begins its 125-Day Dream Voyage
The voyage, internally designated as ART387, is not for short-term vacationers. When the ship docks in Bremerhaven on May 12, 2026, the guests will have spent 125 days on board. Currently, the "Grand Old Lady" is in the western Mediterranean heading for Málaga. Anyone gazing over the railing this morning might still see the coastline fading away on the Port side, while the ship approaches its first destination at a comfortable 16.4 knots.
The route is divided into five exciting stages that are sure to thrill any maritime enthusiast:
- The Departure: From Savona via the Canary Islands and Cape Verde across the big pond to the Caribbean.
- South America Intensive: After island hopping in the Caribbean, the Brazilian coast follows. An absolute highlight will be the overnight stop in Rio de Janeiro.
- The Wild End of the World: Next comes the supreme nautical discipline. The route leads around Cape Horn and through the Chilean fjords. Here, the weather will decide how close the guests get to the spectacular landscapes.
- Canal Passage: From Peru, the ship heads back toward warmer climes to the Panama Canal – a technical masterpiece that brings the Artania from the Pacific back into the Atlantic.
- The Grand Finale: Via the US East Coast, including an overnight stay in New York City (Manhattan), the path finally leads back to Germany.
The MS Artania (IMO 8201480) is not a floating skyscraper, but a classic liner with a soul. Originally christened Royal Princess by Princess Diana in 1984, she still impresses today with her classic lines. Phoenix Reisen invests continuously in the vessel. It was just extensively refitted at the Lloyd Shipyard in late 2024 for around 20 million Euros. You notice this not only in the fresh appearance but also in the technology below deck, which is equipped for the strict environmental regulations in US waters and the sensitive fjords of Chile.
With a length of 231 meters and a width of 32 meters, the Artania has exactly the right dimensions to call at smaller ports that remain inaccessible to mega-liners. A special feature that guests appreciate: There are only outside cabins. No matter where you stay, a view of the sea is guaranteed.
For the next four months, the Artania is home to around 1,000 passengers, primarily "Best Agers" who have the time and leisure for such a voyage of discovery. The language on board is German, which is a decisive comfort factor for many guests, especially regarding medical concerns or lecturer presentations.
The atmosphere on board is familial. People know each other; they greet each other. Dining takes place in two main restaurants with open seating or in the Lido buffet restaurant. This is important on long voyages to escape the daily grind. Captain Alex Zinkovskiy is expected to be in command on the bridge – an experienced mariner who will safely steer the ship through the "Roaring Forties" at Cape Horn. Should it get stormy there, sea legs will be required, as the waves can reach impressive heights. But don't worry: Safety always takes precedence over the schedule.
We wish the Artania, her crew, and all guests "fair winds and following seas" and unforgettable moments on this dream route.
