Good news for all fans of Captain Max Parger and his crew: The wait for the new "Traumschiff" (Dream Ship) adventures has come to a surprisingly early end. German broadcaster ZDF is changing its strategy, making the complete 2025/2026 holiday trilogy—the voyages to Auckland, Bora Bora, and Madikwe (South Africa)—available in its entirety in the ZDFmediathek (on-demand library) as of November 15, 2025.

This "Mediathek First" (VOD First) strategy is a clear signal: The broadcaster is uncoupling the show from its fixed, linear broadcast slots on Germany's traditional holidays (Totensonntag, Christmas, and New Year's Day) and giving viewers the choice. Those who prefer to enjoy the new episodes as a traditional TV event can still do so. The broadcast dates on ZDF remain as scheduled:

  • November 23, 2025: "Das Traumschiff: Auckland"
  • December 26, 2025: "Das Traumschiff: Bora Bora"
  • January 1, 2026: "Das Traumschiff: Afrika: Madikwe"

For everyone else, this new course means: The entire holiday season can be watched on their own schedule, more than a month before the final TV broadcast. ZDF is thus clearly prioritizing flexible "User-Choice" over classic "Appointment-Viewing."

In terms of content, the new season offers a remarkable range. "Das Traumschiff" is using its new voyages to strike distinctly different tones.

The trip to New Zealand (Episode 106), fitting its traditional broadcast slot on Totensonntag (a solemn remembrance day), adopts a more serious tone. The main guest plot centers on a winemaker struggling with an alcohol problem. But there is also movement on board: Part of the permanent crew, including Captain Parger (Florian Silbereisen), Hotel Director Hanna Liebhold (Barbara Wussow), and Staff Captain Martin Grimm (Daniel Morgenroth), participates in a team-building exercise on shore. This creates "tense moods" and suggests that the crew itself will become more involved in serial conflicts.

Serving as a programmatic counterpoint is the Christmas episode (Episode 107) in French Polynesia. Here, viewers get the full escapist package: white beaches, turquoise water, and light, romantic comedies of error. One of the plots revolves around a game of hide-and-seek involving two friends who have snuck aboard as interns.

The New Year's episode (Episode 108), in particular, takes a courageous path. Instead of light entertainment at sea, the journey leads to a game reserve in South Africa. Even more extraordinary is the plot: The script brings a serious topic to the forefront. Two passengers, played by Götz Schubert and Nadine Wrietz, come on board intending to end their lives and decide to follow this path together.

To place such dramatically heavy subject matter on the prestigious New Year's slot is a gamble. It shows that ZDF is using the "Traumschiff" brand to make topics like "mental health" accessible to a broad audience. Serving as a comedic counterweight in this serious episode is, among others, "heute-Show" satirist Lutz van der Horst.

Fans of the core crew can breathe a sigh of relief: Despite rumors to the contrary in spring 2025, the bridge remains firmly occupied. Florian Silbereisen as Captain Max Parger, Barbara Wussow (Hanna Liebhold), Daniel Morgenroth (Martin Grimm), and Collien Ulmen-Fernandes (Dr. Jessica Delgado) are all present in the new episodes.

With its guest stars, ZDF is pursuing a clear strategy that could be called a "casting bridge." It relies on established TV stars (Götz Schubert, Timothy Peach) but also specifically brings younger stars from soaps (Sıla Şahin-Radlinger, Valentina Pahde, Thaddäus Meilinger) and even the streaming sector (Luna Baptiste from "How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)") on board.

Conclusion: "Das Traumschiff" remains true to itself while strategically reinventing itself. With the "Mediathek First" offensive and a bold choice of themes, the TV classic proves it is ready to navigate new waters to build a bridge between television tradition and the digital future.
