The incident occurred on the early evening of Friday, November 14, 2025. At this time, the AIDAnova was on the final leg of its "Metropolis" cruise, at sea on its way from Southampton (England) back to Hamburg.
On board, a passenger suffered a medical emergency so severe that it required immediate transfer to a hospital ashore. The ship's doctors and the nautical crew on the bridge agreed that adequate treatment could not wait until the ship reached the port of Hamburg the next morning.
An emergency evacuation by helicopter was initiated. At the time of the operation on Friday evening, the ship was in the North Sea, "a few nautical miles north of the island of Ameland" and thus in the Dutch sector. A rescue helicopter was requested from the Netherlands.
Such SAR (Search and Rescue) operations in this area are coordinated by the Nederlandse Kustwacht (Dutch Coast Guard). They deploy specialized helicopters equipped for hoist operations over ships, carrying medical personnel on board.
To facilitate the complex and risky transfer of the patient via a winch, the AIDAnova's bridge initiated appropriate maneuvers. The ship reduced its speed to approximately ten knots.
Simultaneously, standard safety procedures for such an operation were enacted on board: The upper outer decks, specifically Decks 16 to 18, were completely closed to passengers to keep the area clear for the winch operation and ensure safety.
The rescue team successfully retrieved the patient and flew them to a hospital for further treatment. The entire process was handled efficiently and did not result in any significant delay for the ship's onward journey to Hamburg.
