The cruise ship already has a turbulent past. It was originally commissioned as the Global Dream for the Asian cruise company Genting Hong Kong. However, the COVID-19 pandemic led to Genting's bankruptcy, and construction of the nearly completed ship was halted in 2022.
In November 2022, Disney Cruise Line acquired the luxury liner for a fraction of its original price. The ship was renamed the Disney Adventure and was to undergo a comprehensive redesign to incorporate the typical Disney charm. The renowned Meyer Werft shipyard was brought in for this purpose. The conversion from an Asian casino cruiser to a family-friendly Disney ship was a very complex task.
In early September 2025, the Disney Adventure left the Wismar shipyard to prepare for its sea trials. Shortly thereafter, on September 10, the surprising news came from Disney about the delay. This means that all planned voyages until early March 2026 will have to be canceled. Many customers who were looking forward to their trip are affected. They now have to reschedule their travel plans and deal with flights and hotels. Disney needs to handle this with care to avoid losing customer trust.
The delay also has a financial aspect. Disney will lose revenue from the canceled voyages, and additional costs for compensation may arise.
Despite the delay, the ship is of great importance to the Wismar shipyard. The successful completion of the project is symbolic of the shipyard's transformation. In the future, it is set to build naval vessels under the direction of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The construction of the Disney Adventure is considered a crucial "bridge project" that secures the transition and protects the jobs of up to 1,500 employees.
The Disney Adventure will be the first ship in the Disney fleet to have a homeport in Asia, setting sail from Singapore. With this, Disney is entering a new market and banking on the growing demand in Southeast Asia.
