Hamburg Cruise Days 2025: Your Guide to a Smooth Arrival
Experts are therefore warning of massive traffic disruptions. These are compounded by parallel events like "Blue Port Hamburg" and existing congestion hotspots on the A1 and A7 motorways.
The most important recommendation is to leave your car at home. Arriving by private vehicle is considered highly inefficient and frustrating. Public transport (ÖPNV) is the best and most relaxing option to get to the festival.
From September 12 to 14, 2025, the Hamburg Cruise Days will transform the port area from the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken to the Elbphilharmonie into a huge event mile. Even on September 11, a day before the official start, the first roads were already closed. The setup for the event began on Wednesday.
What's more, the Cruise Days are not the only major event in Hamburg. "Blue Port Hamburg" and other festivals are taking place simultaneously. These multiple events put additional strain on the transport network and could worsen traffic jams.
Anyone already in the port area will notice the initial restrictions. The square in front of the Landungsbrücken is already completely closed to traffic. Johannisbollwerk, Vorsetzen, and Helgoländer Allee are also heavily affected.
As mentioned, the lack of real-time traffic information is a major issue. Since the city's official app is not working, visitors must rely on the pre-announced closures. Spontaneous detours are hardly an option.
The absolute highlight of the festival is the Grand Hamburg Cruise Days Parade on Saturday evening. Five of the eight cruise ships calling at the port will participate:
- Vasco da Gama (nicko cruises)
- Mein Schiff 4 (TUI Cruises)
- AIDAperla (AIDA Cruises)
- MSC Preziosa (MSC Cruises)
- MS Sans Souci (PLANTOURS)
The M/S Costa Favolosa was canceled at short notice. The AIDAsol, the EUROPA, and the Norwegian Dawn will also be in port but will not participate in the parade.
For safety reasons, the police have established a drone no-fly zone. So, if you want to take cool aerial photos, you should do so outside the restricted area.
The logistical planning for the Hamburg Cruise Days 2025 clearly shows that the organizers are focusing on public transport. The city of Hamburg is trying to keep private cars out of the port area as much as possible.
The visitor experience this year will largely depend on whether they follow the recommendations and leave their cars behind. Those who still need to arrive by car should use park-and-ride options on the city's outskirts or use parking garages in the city center and cover the rest of the journey on foot or by public transport.
The Hamburg Cruise Days 2025 are not just a maritime spectacle but also an important test run for the mobility planning of future major events in densely populated cities.
