The Port of Hamburg experienced a major fire at the end of August that presented rescue services with a huge challenge. A fire that broke out in a warehouse in the Veddel district turned out to be more dangerous than initially thought. There is now new information: the Hamburg public prosecutor's office has started an investigation and is targeting a 44-year-old man who is suspected of having caused the fire.

The incident began with a burning vehicle in the hall. However, the fire quickly developed a life-threatening dynamic, as gas pressure containers, presumably containing laughing gas, were stored in the hall. The containers repeatedly exploded and hurled debris hundreds of meters away. These projectiles were not only a great danger to the emergency services, but also started new fires in the surrounding area.

The fire department had to temporarily withdraw and could not get directly to the fire. Around 320 emergency workers were on site, including the Hamburg Airport fire department and the company fire department of Aurubis. They fought the flames for over 20 hours. The roof of the warehouse eventually collapsed completely.

A total of six people were injured in the fire, including three emergency workers. A woman who was initially in a life-threatening condition is now out of danger.

Traffic was also severely affected. On the nearby A1 motorway, there was a traffic jam of up to twelve kilometers as burning debris had flown onto the road. Shipping was not affected, but parts of inland and port shipping had to be closed.

A large, widely visible cloud of smoke hung over the districts of Veddel, Moorflieet, and Bergedorf. Residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed as the fire gases were considered to be harmful to health.

The investigation into the cause of the fire began with a significant delay. After the disaster, the scene of the fire was not immediately accessible due to the risk of explosion and the harmful gases. Police fire investigators were only able to start their work after a few days. This delay explains why the announcement of the investigation against the 44-year-old man took place more than two weeks after the fire. The Hamburg public prosecutor's office has now taken the lead.

The incident shows how complex such major events are and that the first information that becomes known after a disaster is often only provisional. The final and precise facts are only available after the rescue and safety measures have been completed.
