This marks the second time MS Finnmarken has been in a shipyard this year. While a planned technical overhaul and modernization took place in a dry dock in Fredrikshavn, Denmark, in the spring, the recent stay in Hamburg was required on short notice and was unforeseen. As part of Hurtigruten's "Signature Fleet," the ship is designed for year-round expedition cruises starting and ending in Hamburg.
The voyage commencing today will follow the established summer route, taking passengers along the picturesque Norwegian coastline up to the North Cape. Ports of call and destinations on the round trip include Stavanger, Bergen, the impressive Hjørundfjord, and the island archipelagos of Lofoten and Senja.
A special feature of the ship is its more environmentally friendly propulsion system: thanks to a hybrid engine and shore power capabilities, fuel consumption and emissions are reduced both at sea and in the sensitive fjord landscapes. In ports with the appropriate infrastructure, MS Finnmarken can operate almost entirely without emissions by connecting to the onshore power grid.
