Engine Failure on Celebrity Constellation: Cruise Ship Adrift for Hours in the Mediterranean

A serious technical incident occurred aboard the Celebrity Constellation this past Saturday, August 2, 2025. During an 11-day Mediterranean cruise, the vessel experienced a complete engine failure, leading to a widespread power outage on board. At the time, the ship was several nautical miles off the Italian coast in the Ionian Sea and, according to passenger reports, was left adrift and unable to maneuver for approximately two hours.

The ship's technical crews responded immediately to the emergency. Engineers worked diligently to restore power to the propulsion and onboard systems. Their efforts were successful, allowing the engines to be gradually restarted. Throughout the incident, safety was maintained via an emergency power supply to critical areas such as the bridge and the engine control room. The Celebrity Constellation was able to resume its journey with a slight delay.

For passengers, the blackout had a significant impact on comfort. Nearly all guest areas were affected, resulting in the failure of air conditioning, lighting, and toilet flushing systems. According to passenger accounts, only a selection of cold food could be served at dinner due to limited kitchen capabilities.

The cruise line, Celebrity Cruises, has announced a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of the engine failure and to implement measures to minimize the risk of such an incident in the future.

Despite the incident, there is positive news: the cruise ship reached the port of Messina, Sicily, on schedule this Sunday morning. Barring any further major technical issues, the voyage is expected to continue as planned.
