For the upcoming COP30 World Climate Conference in Belém, Brazil, two well-known cruise ships, the Costa Diadema and the MSC Seaview, will be used as floating hotels. This measure is intended to significantly expand the city's limited hotel capacity at the mouth of the Amazon River.

The cruise line Costa Crociere has officially confirmed the deployment of the Costa Diadema. This decision has a direct impact on the ship's schedule: all cruises between October 18 and November 28, 2025, have been cancelled. In mid-October 2025, the ship will conclude its regular voyages in Savona, Italy, before crossing the Atlantic towards the northern coast of Brazil. From November 5 to 22, 2025, the Costa Diadema will then be anchored in Belém to serve as accommodation. The start of its South America season is scheduled for November 28, 2025, from Santos near São Paulo.

The Costa Diadema will be joined by the MSC Seaview, which has also been chartered by MSC Cruises for this purpose. Together, the two ships will increase accommodation capacity by approximately 6,000 additional beds. A logistical advantage is that both ships are already scheduled to be stationed in South America for the 2025/2026 winter season. This eliminates the need for a complex relocation from other regions.

Hosting COP30 presents the city of Belém with significant logistical challenges. Around 50,000 participants from over 200 nations are expected, including high-ranking heads of state, government leaders, and activists. To manage this influx, additional accommodations will be provided not only on the ships but also through converted schools, vacation rentals, and other hotels.
