A powerful undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 has struck the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The quake's epicenter was located approximately 130 kilometers off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula at a depth of 20.7 kilometers. The massive seismic event triggered a tsunami, with initial waves having already reached the sparsely populated coast of Kamchatka.

In response to the natural disaster, a widespread tsunami warning was issued for the entire Pacific region. Areas under alert include Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, and the West Coast of North America, where authorities are on high alert. For the Hawaiian archipelago, officials predicted the arrival of tsunami waves for the evening of July 29, 2025, around 7:00 PM local time. Residents and tourists were urgently advised to evacuate coastal zones and seek safety on higher ground.

The tsunami threat also had direct consequences for cruise ship traffic in the area. The Pride of America, operated by Norwegian Cruise Line, was compelled to depart prematurely from the port of Hilo on Big Island under official orders. This early departure was a critical safety measure, as ships are significantly safer on the open sea during a tsunami than in a harbor basin. According to passenger reports, some guests were left ashore as they could not return to the ship in time. It is anticipated that these individuals will be provided with alternative transportation to the next port of call.

Another vessel, the Oceania Regatta from Oceania Cruises, was also affected. The luxury ship was forced to weigh anchor off Kailua-Kona and head for open water.

The timely warnings and the swift actions of the ships' commands were crucial in protecting passengers and crew from the potential dangers of the tsunami waves.

Affected Cruise Itineraries:

  • Pride of America (July 26 – August 2, 2025): Honolulu (Oahu) – Kahului (Maui) – Sea Day – Hilo (Big Island) – Kailua-Kona (Big Island) – Nawiliwili (Kauai) – Sea Day – Honolulu (Oahu)
  • Oceania Regatta (July 17 – August 1, 2025): Papeete (Tahiti) – Bora Bora – Bora Bora – Raiatea – Rangiroa – Sea Day – Nuku Hiva – 4 Sea Days – Hilo (Big Island) – Kailua-Kona (Big Island) – Kahului (Maui) – Nawiliwili (Kauai) – Honolulu (Oahu)
