The extensive work included not only the implementation of high-voltage shore power supply but also preparatory measures for a biofuel blending plant. Furthermore, an efficient energy management system was introduced, and maneuverability was enhanced through the refurbishment of the rudder system and bow and stern thrusters. A new, environmentally friendly exterior paint now protects the hull. Inside, the bathrooms of cabins on Deck 5 were renovated. The air conditioning system underwent a complete renewal, including the replacement and overhaul of all cooling units and distribution stations. Newly installed modern hydraulic and control systems for the stabilizers ensure greater stability and comfort on board. Improved internet connectivity is provided by the integration of Starlink, while new shaded areas with awnings and parasols on Deck 12 enhance outdoor comfort.
Since entering service for nicko cruises in 2021, the ship's Portuguese owner, Mystic Cruises, has sent the vessel, built in 1993, to dry dock almost annually to progressively equip it for future requirements. With the current measures, the frequency of shipyard stays is intended to extend to three years, barring unforeseen circumstances. The Vasco da Gama is the only ocean-going cruise ship in the nicko cruises fleet, accommodating a maximum of 1000 passengers. It is deployed for cruises in European waters during the summer season and for world voyages during the winter season.
Currently, the ship is on a nine-day voyage from Lisbon to Greece, marking the start of the summer season. After approximately one month in the Mediterranean, the Vasco da Gama will set course for Kiel as part of a Western Europe cruise. From Kiel and Hamburg, diverse itineraries to Northern European destinations are planned until the commencement of the next world cruise in early November 2025/26.
An example of its itinerary is the route from May 4 to May 13, 2025: The journey begins in Lisbon, proceeds through a sea day and a two-day stay in Cadiz to Motril. After two more sea days, interspersed with a stop in Cagliari (Sardinia), the ship reaches Palermo (Sicily). Another sea day leads to Katakolon before the voyage concludes in Piraeus/Athens after a final day at sea.
