The primary change concerns the minimum age for children on extended sea voyages. Specifically, this means that toddlers who have not yet reached their second birthday (i.e., are under two years old) will no longer be permitted to participate in cruises lasting eleven nights or more. Previously, this restriction only applied to infants under one year of age. The new, expanded requirement will become mandatory on May 15, 2025, for all relevant bookings and travel departures.
MSC Cruises states that passengers whose existing bookings are impacted by this change have already been contacted. The cruise line is offering these guests flexible solutions: they have the choice between rebooking onto another suitable voyage free of charge or receiving a full cancellation of their original booking without any penalties. The rationale behind such age restrictions on longer sea journeys often relates to the limited capabilities for adequate emergency medical care for very young children onboard, especially during extended periods at sea far from land.
