The renaming will take place during a scheduled technical overhaul. After completing its final voyage under the name MS Otto Sverdrup at the Cruise Center Steinwerder in Hamburg on April 11, 2025, the vessel will be transferred to the Orskov Yard in Frederikshavn, Denmark. Technical maintenance and modernization work will be carried out there in the coming weeks. Following this, the vessel will resume operations as MS Finnmarken.
The first deployment under the reinstated name is scheduled for May 16, 2025, on the summer route. This route runs from Hamburg along the Norwegian coast to the North Cape. Ports of call will include well-known destinations such as Bergen, the island of Senja, the Lofoten archipelago, Honningsvåg (the port for the North Cape), and the scenic Hjørundfjord.
MS Finnmarken is equipped with modern environmental technologies. This includes a hybrid propulsion system that helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions both at sea and in sensitive fjord areas. Furthermore, the ship has a shore power connection. This allows for nearly emission-free operation in ports with the necessary infrastructure.
The temporary naming as MS Otto Sverdrup paid homage to the eponymous Norwegian polar explorer (1854–1930). Otto Sverdrup gained fame for the first crossing of Greenland on skis together with Fridtjof Nansen and other companions. He also participated in significant polar expeditions and captained the legendary polar research vessel Fram. An interesting connection to the shipping line is that Sverdrup also served as a captain for Hurtigruten between his expeditions.
