The pioneering vessel, named "Viking Libra," is already under construction at Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard and is scheduled for delivery to Viking at the end of 2026. With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons, a length of 239 meters, and capacity for 998 passengers in 499 cabins, the "Viking Libra" represents the small cruise ship segment. Its innovative concept aims for maximum sustainability. It will be capable of entirely emission-free navigation and operation, enabling access to ecologically sensitive regions.
At its core is a novel hydrogen propulsion system which, combined with modern fuel cell technology, generates up to six megawatts of power. This technology is set to establish a new benchmark for the industry's decarbonization efforts. Fincantieri also plans to equip the subsequent ocean-going vessel for Viking, the "Viking Astrea," scheduled for delivery in 2027 and also being built in Ancona, with this hydrogen technology.
The realization of this technologically demanding project underscores Fincantieri's expertise in integrating groundbreaking technologies in shipbuilding. A key role is played by Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM), a Fincantieri subsidiary specializing in advanced fuel cell technology. IFM is developing and supplying the customized Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell system, specifically optimized for cruise ship requirements. Also unique is the solution for storing and refueling hydrogen directly on board using a container system, intended to bypass potential supply chain bottlenecks. This contract solidifies IFM's position as a leading provider of environmentally friendly propulsion solutions for maritime and land-based applications.
Parallel to the hydrogen initiative, Fincantieri and Viking have signed an agreement for the construction of two additional cruise ships, scheduled for delivery in 2031. The contract also includes an option for two more units. These vessels will be based on the successful designs previously built by Fincantieri for Viking. They also correspond to the size of approximately 54,300 gross tons and 998 passengers. The newbuilds will be designed according to the latest environmental and safety regulations and equipped with state-of-the-art systems. The financial value of the order is considered significant, but it is subject to financing and other customary conditions.
Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, described the "Viking Libra" as a milestone and confirmation of the commitment to sustainable shipping. "This marks a crucial moment on our path to climate neutrality and underscores Fincantieri's role as a catalyst for the industry's green transition," said Folgiero. He also emphasized that beyond shipbuilding, a systemic development is being driven by integrating cutting-edge technologies and creating a model for the broader use of hydrogen in the maritime sector. The repeat order from Viking confirms the strong partnership and trust in Fincantieri's expertise.
Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking, highlighted that Viking has focused on fuel efficiency from the beginning. "We are very proud that the Viking Libra and Viking Astrea will be even more environmentally friendly," said Hagen. "Viking consciously chose hydrogen as it offers a true zero-emission solution. We look forward to welcoming the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship to our fleet in 2026."
