Emergency Requires Immediate Action
After its stay in Basseterre (St. Kitts) on March 23, 2025, the voyage was supposed to continue with seven days at sea before reaching Tenerife. However, the departure from St. Kitts was already delayed by two hours due to a prior medical disembarkation. The following day at sea, another emergency arose, requiring an immediate evacuation. According to onboard reports, the AIDAperla changed course and headed toward Guadeloupe, where the affected passenger was airlifted ashore via helicopter.
The rescue operation proved challenging—it took two attempts before the evacuation was successful. At approximately 04:15 local time, the patient was safely transferred, allowing the ship to resume its transatlantic journey.
When Are Medical Evacuations Necessary?
While cruise ships are equipped with onboard medical facilities, serious illnesses or injuries often require treatment on land. In such cases, either a helicopter is dispatched, the coast guard is alerted, or the ship diverts to the nearest port. The decision is always made in the patient’s best interest.
AIDAperla’s Itinerary Continues
After completing its Atlantic crossing, the AIDAperla is expected to arrive in Hamburg on April 9, 2025. There, the ship will begin its summer 2025 season, offering weekly voyages on the Metropolis Route and to the Norwegian Fjords. It will dock every Saturday at Hamburg’s Cruise Center Steinwerder until October 25, 2025. For the winter 2025/26 season, the AIDAperla will return to the Caribbean.
Route Overview (March 20 – April 9, 2025):
