On Monday, January 13, 2025, a medical emergency occurred aboard the AIDAblu during its current Canary Islands cruise, requiring a helicopter evacuation. At the time of the incident, the ship was on a sea day, traveling from Las Palmas on Gran Canaria to Funchal on Madeira.

To facilitate the helicopter rescue, AIDAblu temporarily adjusted its course, heading south to meet the approaching aircraft. The evacuation was completed successfully within approximately 30 minutes. Despite this brief interruption, the remainder of the cruise itinerary was unaffected, as the distances between destinations on Canary Islands routes are relatively short.

Passengers were kept well-informed throughout the process by the ship’s Staff Captain, who provided regular updates. The clear and professional communication ensured that guests felt supported and reassured during the incident.

Medical emergencies on cruise ships require special measures when onboard treatments are insufficient or the ship’s medical facility cannot handle the situation adequately. In such cases, decisions are always made with the guest’s well-being as the top priority. Depending on the urgency, evacuations may involve a helicopter, transfer to a coast guard vessel, or docking at the nearest port to hand the patient over to local emergency services.
