The ASUKA III, the latest construction from MEYER WERFT, is scheduled to leave Covered Dock I (Hall 5) for the first time this Saturday, January 18. The docking-out maneuver is expected to begin around 10 a.m. Following the departure, the vessel will berth at the outfitting pier in the shipyard harbor.

Funnel Installation and Timeline

During the maneuver, the ASUKA III, built for the Japanese cruise operator NYK Cruises, will have its funnel installed. However, the schedule may be subject to changes due to weather conditions or production constraints.

First NYK Cruises Ship Built in Papenburg

For the first time, a ship for NYK Cruises is being constructed in Papenburg. MEYER WERFT is incorporating numerous solutions tailored specifically for the Japanese market. A standout feature is the spa area, which includes a traditional Japanese open-air bath.

Additionally, the ASUKA III is the first cruise ship in nearly 30 years to be built under the supervision of the Japanese flag state. Delivery of the approximately 52,000 GT vessel is planned for spring 2025.

Technical Details and Key Features

The cruise ship measures 230 meters in length and 29.8 meters in width. It can accommodate approximately 740 passengers and offers 385 cabins and suites. With a crew of 470 members, exceptional service is assured.

For the first time, the cruise line is employing an environmentally friendly LNG propulsion system. The ASUKA III is regarded as a pioneer of a new generation of ships, although it is likely to remain the only model of its kind.

Future Deployment of the ASUKA III

Designed specifically for the Japanese market, the vessel will be stationed in Yokohama, near Tokyo. This home port will serve as an excellent starting point for future voyages.

ASUKA III Specifications:

  • Length: 230.2 meters
  • Width: 29.8 meters
  • Shipyard: MEYER WERFT, Papenburg (Germany)
  • Cabins and Suites: 385
  • Maximum Passenger Capacity: 744
  • Crew: 470
